Consular Service Burnout

Serving others through crisis can be deeply meaningful, but it can also be emotionally demanding.

Consular professionals regularly support individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult moments, including medical emergencies, deaths abroad, detentions, family crises, evacuations and other high-stakes situations.

This group was created specifically for consular professionals who want a space to slow down, reconnect with themselves and receive support from others who understand the unique realities of the profession.

This group is for consular professionals who:

  • Care deeply about the people you serve but feel increasingly depleted.
  • Feel isolated because few people understand the realities of consular work.
  • Continue thinking about difficult cases long after the workday has ended.
  • This group is for consular professionals only. Please contact us if you need similar support.

What to expect:

  • A remote, weekly, 90-minute Zoom call with a community of up to 25 group members.
  • Opportunities to connect with other consular professionals in a confidential and supportive environment.
  • The purpose of the group is not to eliminate the challenges of consular work. Rather, it’s designed to help participants build a healthier relationship with those challenges while reducing isolation and increasing support.

Skills you will learn:

  • Recognizing burnout before it becomes overwhelming.
  • Understanding compassion fatigue and emotional exhaustion.
  • Navigating the emotional labor of consular service.
  • Maintaining healthy professional boundaries.
  • Managing responsibility within institutional limitations.
  • Reconnecting with purpose and professional meaning.
  • Developing sustainable practices that support long-term well-being.
Your Group Leader

Ramon Omar Aguado Valenzuela, M.A.

My work sits at the intersection of psychology and consular service. Drawing on my experience working for several foreign governments in the United States, I understand the emotional weight of supporting others through crisis. I am passionate about creating a space where consular professionals feel seen, understood and supported as they navigate burnout, compassion fatigue and the challenges of sustaining meaningful service without sacrificing their own well-being.
